This is it, the results you have been waiting for. The AIHL Fans 2014 Awards have been decided. Thank you to all “124” of you who voted. I hope you had fun. We are only able to see results from the first 1oo though. This is simply because I am cheap and don’t want to upgrade my SurveyMonkey account. BOOOOO, next year we will use SurveyApe. Bigger and Better.
Good Guy Greg of the Year – The Goodest Guy in the AIHL
All hail Commissioner Luke Read of the Sydney Bears. Luke being a fantaboulous guy on the ice, also is Good Guy Greg off the Ice. We watch Luke get lit up, we still love him. We all want to have a beer with Ready, we want to have a beer with Luke, because Luke Read’s our mate.
Chumbawamba of the Year (I get knocked down but I get up again)
Do you even hockey bro? This is is the award for players that have notably spent a bit of time on their backs whether it be frequently, or one memorable moment. The winner, Petri Pitkänen of the CBR Brave.
The moment that won him the award, a puck in the eye and a smashed up mask vs the Melbourne Ice. Melbourne Ice ‘tendy, Gustaf Huth, let him his mask for the remainder.

But they can never take our freedom – Craziest Fans in the AIHL
“What an absolute bunch of nutters.” Admit it, if you’ve been to Canberra or a game involving CBR Brave, you’ve seen some pretty tribal uber passionate fans that you have probably shaken your head at.
Passion is not a bad thing at all. To have your fans THAT behind your team, must help. Congratulations CBR Brave fans. Not only have you resurrected your club, but you stayed with them all season. A worthy winner.
Remember the Titans – Most Improved Team of the Year
Gee. I wonder who this will be? Yep, you guessed it, the CBR Brave. Having been wooden spooners under the Canberra Knights guise in 2013 with two wins, the CBR Brave, got shut down, got revived and came 3rd in the regular season, going out against the Melbourne Ice in the AIHL Finals. It could have been one of the best hockey stories of all time, it wasn’t meant to be. I was however a tremendous comeback and one which will line on our minds for a very long time to come.
Notable second were the Melbourne Mustangs, who, after just missing out on the playoffs in 2013, came back to win the Goodall Cup this year.
I’m CEO B1tch! – The Social Star of the Year
Survey ruined. OK maybe, not as much as we thought but we cannot ignore the juggernaut that is the Facebook group, AIHL Fans.
AIHL Fans is the soapbox, the community, the content aggregator that fans of the AIHL have been craving for so long. Whilst the conversations at times, could be wanting in tact, understanding and compassion, the AIHL community is talking, sharing and getting to know each other.
Facebook Group, AIHL Fans isn’t a sign that it’s the social media age, as social media in the AIHL is very much in its infancy. It’s a sign that fans of the AIHL simply wanted a voice.
The Twitters – Best Club Game Day Tweet stream
Disclosure: Author of this post leads the Digital Team for the Melbourne Mustangs and outside of Game Day, tweets from the Mustangs’ Twitter Account
May we never forget where we came from. While some teams are lucky enough to have a livestream, some teams only have Twitter. Some teams on some game days, do not even have that.
Twitter is the basic bread and butter of communication from an AIHL team. It simply does not get anymore raw and basic in social media than Twitter.
The Melbourne Mustangs utilised Twitter in a unique entertaining way in 2013 to cover for a lack of Livestream. This year with a livestream, they took on a new flavour and had a play mate, the CBR Brave.
The banter between the two team has gained international recognition, especially from NHL teams. Whilst both deserve the award for taking Twitter up a level this year, you the fans voted. Melbourne Mustangs with the best Twitter stream in 2014.
Look Mum I’m on TV – Best Club Livestream of the Year
While Twitter is the basic game communication baseline, livestream is the current standard.
Through ATC Productions, the Melbourne Mustangs started streaming for the first time this year. The team of Craig Durham, Rod Johns and Stephen White, bought a new flavour. So did the Ascention Sports for the CBR Brave. A different style again. All part of what makes this league amazing.
You the fans voted for the Mustangs livestream this year.
KONY 2012 – Viral Event of the Year
What a year it has been for the AIHL and International Media. It started off with them getting wind of the Canberra Knights folding. It peaked with Perth Thunder’s Ric Del Basso’s celly. It ended with the Mustangs’ Michael James posing naked in front of the Goodall Cup.
It could only be one, Ric Del Basso’s Celly is the best exposure the AIHL has EVER had. I know this because my Canadian family saw it AND talked about it and the last time Australia got a mention in sports over there, was when they banned slabs and kegs from Mt Panorama. That’s the only Australian Sporting news North America cared about. Get the picture?
AIHL Fans Poltergeist of the Year – A supernatural being responsible for unexpected disturbances
This is it, the one you’ve been waiting for.
AIHL Fans, the Facebook Group has had a few who have featured heavily this year. Whether it be incessant meme’s (Nads) or the inability to know the difference between your and you’re (Sam), the few have had disturbing influence, caused damage yet giving entertainment and life.
I don’t need to go on, because you stopped reading this long ago.
Needs more Nads.
This podcasting stuff is popular – Podcast of the Year
Disclosure: Author is part of It’s All Goodall
It’s been a great year for the podcast, we have seen four completely new ones pop up, from effectively none.
There is certainly room for more. Take it from me, they are a lot of fun to do.
The winner, It’s All Goodall. Being one quarter of this podcast, I thank you.
